Microcosm

Microcosm Album

A microcosm is a diminutive, representative world; a system more or less analogous to a much larger system in constitution, confinement, or development. Or as the greeks might put it, a small world. David's take: microcosm is an idea or concept based on something larger than itself. Whether it is a system, idea, place, or thing. If you where to look at a small rock or a grain of sand, seeing it whole, recognizing it’s parts. You could tell someone, this grain of sand represents our galaxy. The grain of sand is being used as a microcosm, but in reality, it’s just a grain of sand. Music is a means of expression. Part of what David is expressing is mystery, the unknown or how we as human beings like to compare one thing to another. It’s a system we as humans use to help figure out large and complicated things. As a listener, imagine being a microcosm, among other microcosms. As living beings, that is what is happening subconsciously as we navigate through a crowded room. Every living being is a world in itself, made of cells, bone, and muscle. Just like our planet is made of water, rock, sand, and dirt. Both have infinite parts, yet exist in a larger setting. You are a small world, you are a microcosm. Microcosm the composition, is based or inspired by Steve Coleman’s Micro-Move.  Micro-Move is a great groove, with overlapping two bar phrases. David took this idea of overlapping phrase and extended them to four bars then added an 8 bar turnaround that has a swing feel. Special thanks to: David Wade Mitton, Michael Lavoie, Marcus Monteiro, Miki Matsuki, Bill Jones, and Jim Robitaille, for there incite, creativity, and positive energy throughout the project. All songs written by David Mitton.
